Eswatini in Glasgow: Celebrating Sporting Excellence and the Power of Commonwealth Cooperation
The Kingdom of Eswatini proudly joined the Commonwealth family in Glasgow, Scotland, for an important celebration of sport, unity and international cooperation, as the city hosted the 23rd Commonwealth Games alongside the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting in July 2026.
The two events provided an important platform not only to celebrate the achievements and aspirations of Commonwealth athletes, but also to reflect on the wider role that sport can play in promoting healthier communities, empowering young people, advancing inclusion and supporting sustainable development.
A particularly proud moment came during the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, when Team Eswatini marched into the OVO Hydro, joining athletes and delegations from across the Commonwealth.
Hayley Michelle Hoy had the honour of leading Team Eswatini as Flag Bearer, proudly carrying the national flag, while Mukelo Mncobi Dlamini carried the Commonwealth Sport King’s Baton.

Reimagining the Power of Sport: 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting
The sporting celebrations in Glasgow were complemented by an equally important policy engagement through the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, held on 22 July 2026 and convened by the Commonwealth Secretariat in partnership with Commonwealth Sport and the Scottish Government.
Eswatini was represented at the Meeting by the Honourable Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture Affairs, Hon. Muzi Bongani Nzima, together with the High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Eswatini and officials from the High Commission in London.
Held under the theme “Reimagining the power of sport towards healthier, fairer and equitable Commonwealth communities,” the Meeting provided an opportunity for Commonwealth Ministers and senior officials to consider how sport can be harnessed beyond competition to contribute meaningfully to national and international development.
In his intervention, Hon. Nzima welcomed the progress made in reimagining the Commonwealth Games and commended Commonwealth Sport and the host Governments of Scotland, Malta and India for their leadership in taking the Commonwealth Sport Movement forward.
The Minister expressed Eswatini’s support for efforts to ensure that the Games remain relevant, sustainable and accessible through a more flexible and cost-effective model. He also supported calls for all regions of the Commonwealth, including Africa, to have opportunities to host the Games, while emphasising the importance of ensuring that the benefits associated with the Commonwealth Games extend beyond host nations to the wider Commonwealth.
The broader discussions at the Sports Ministers Meeting highlighted the contribution that sport and physical activity can make towards healthier and more resilient communities. Ministers considered opportunities to strengthen cooperation across the Commonwealth, increase investment in community sport and physical activity, support young people, empower women and girls, create economic opportunities and advance sustainable development.
The Meeting also reinforced the importance of ensuring that sport remains safe, accessible and inclusive, including by expanding opportunities for women and girls to participate in sport and assume leadership and decision-making roles.
Together, Eswatini’s participation in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and its engagement at the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting reflected the Kingdom’s commitment to the Commonwealth sporting movement and to harnessing the wider potential of sport to empower young people, strengthen communities and advance cooperation across the Commonwealth.
