MANDATE OF THE KINGDOM OF ESWATINI HIGH COMMISSION IN LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM
Introduction
The Kingdom of Eswatini High Commission in London is accredited to the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland, as well as to Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
Guided by the 2024 Policy Statement of the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Kingdom’s Foreign Policy, and the Eswatini National Development Plan 2023/24–2027/28, the Mission’s mandate is to advance Eswatini’s interests across multiple sectors in the United Kingdom and other accredited countries.
Strategic Importance
The Mission’s location provides Eswatini with valuable opportunities to engage in and benefit from initiatives within the United Kingdom and other accredited nations.
Economic Objectives
As a global financial center and leader in fields such as education, manufacturing, technology, tourism, and politics, the UK represents a significant opportunity for trade and partnership for Eswatini. The UK ranks as the sixth-largest economy globally, with a GDP of approximately US$3.6 trillion.
Since Brexit, the UK’s Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with SACUM countries, including Mozambique, grants duty-free, quota-free access for goods exported from Eswatini to the UK. This complements access to the European Union market, the world’s largest single market.
Additionally, as a Commonwealth member, Eswatini stands to benefit from the CHOGM 2018 Commonwealth Trade Connectivity Agenda, which envisions a potential increase in intra-Commonwealth trade to US$2 trillion by 2030. Eswatini also gains from Commonwealth initiatives in debt management, climate finance, and resilience-building.
The International Sugar Association, headquartered in London, provides Eswatini an avenue to influence global sugar policies. Eswatini’s active involvement has enhanced regional benefits for SADC/Africa, including hosting the Annual ISO Meetings in 2023—a move that contributed to Eswatini’s economic visibility.
Promoting Eswatini tourism in the UK and other countries is a priority for the Mission, with participation in the annual World Travel Market (WTM) in London as a focal initiative. This premier event offers networking, industry insights, and promotional opportunities that support Eswatini’s tourism growth. The Mission facilitates exhibitions and disseminates Eswatini Tourism Authority publications to expand tourism outreach.
Political Engagement
The Mission actively engages the UK government and stakeholders to represent Eswatini’s positions on international and bilateral issues.
Eswatini’s Commonwealth membership provides support and guidance on democracy, governance, and the rule of law. The Commonwealth Human Rights Unit periodically assists with technical support in areas such as human rights and public administration.
Through the United Nations’ Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process, Eswatini receives periodic assessments of its human rights practices, supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Mission further facilitates the participation of Eswatini’s parliamentarians in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, fostering democratic engagement and capacity-building.
Public Services
The Mission provides essential government services to Emaswati residing, studying, working, and traveling in the UK and accredited countries. Services include birth registration, passport issuance, certification, police clearance, and repatriation support.
For tourists and investors, the Mission offers visa services, travel advice, and connections to relevant stakeholders in Eswatini. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mission demonstrated its value by facilitating the evacuation of Emaswati from the UK and Europe.
The Mission also plays a crucial role in promoting global opportunities for Emaswati by disseminating information on scholarships, employment, and academic vacancies.
Conclusion
The Kingdom of Eswatini High Commission in London delivers substantial benefits for Eswatini, enhancing the country’s diplomatic, economic, and political profile.
